WHO WE ARE
Sister Mary Ann Dirr, RSM, was a woman of deep faith and compassion who dedicated her life to walking alongside those in need. Guided by the values of the Sisters of Mercy, she founded Mercy Center in 1990 with a vision of hope, dignity, and empowerment for women and families in the South Bronx.
Believing in the inherent worth of every person, Sister Mary Ann created a space where immigrant women, survivors of violence, and families struggling with poverty could find community, strength, and the tools to transform their lives.
From its humble beginnings in a small classroom at a local school, Mercy Center grew under her leadership into a vital community anchor, offering programs in English language learning, parenting, immigration legal services, and more.
Her legacy lives on in every woman who discovers her voice, in every child given a brighter future, in every man who has learned to live a more peaceful and healthy life, and in the unwavering sense of welcome and belonging that defines Mercy Center today.
