About us

Our People, Our Neighborhood

Through our core programs and a full complement of support services, Mercy Center addresses four critical challenges facing people who live in the Mott Haven section of the South Bronx:

  • successful employment while escaping economic poverty
  • violent and oppressive behaviors in families and the community
  • overburdened and underperforming schools
  • helping immigrants escape feelings of isolation by recognizing the power they have to change their lives as a vital part of their community.

”Just like the joy of basking in sunlight, there is great joy in basking in the light that emanates from the hearts of people involved in a good and generous work. And so it is at Mercy Center - participants, friends, staff, supporters, volunteers, foundations.”

Joseph S. Dirr

Co-Director Mercy Center 2003-2011

About Us

Founded in 1990, Mercy Center has grown from a volunteer counseling service operating out of a single classroom located in a Mott Haven school into a respected, community-based resource offering comprehensive, holistic services and programs that support our participants’ efforts to improve their lives.
